Gianni Moscon disqualified again as controversial past returns to focus in Burgos

The 32-year-old Red Bull-Bora-Hansgrohe rider completed Thursday’s third stage but was later removed from the results by the race jury.

According to the commissaires’ report, Moscon breached UCI regulation 2.12.007, article 8.2.1, which covers improper conduct during a race or towards other riders.

The exact nature of the incident has not yet been made public.

Bahrain Victorious rider Mathijs Paasschens also received a yellow card after stage 3 under the same offence listed in the UCI regulations. The Dutchman remained in the race, however, and neither the official race communiqué nor the teams involved have indicated that the two cases were connected.

Moscon was also handed a yellow card, his second of the 2026 season, and lost 50 UCI points. Under the UCI’s yellow card system, accumulating further cards within the relevant period can lead to additional sanctions.

For Moscon, however, the latest disqualification inevitably brings some of the most controversial moments of his career back into focus.

Moscon’s latest disqualification adds to a long disciplinary record. In 2017, Team Sky suspended him for six weeks after he made racist comments towards Kévin Reza at the Tour de Romandie.

A year later, he was expelled from the Tour de France after television footage showed him striking Élie Gesbert during stage 15. The UCI subsequently handed him a five week suspension.

Another high profile incident followed at Kuurne Brussel Kuurne in 2020, where Moscon was disqualified after throwing a bicycle in the direction of Jens Debusschere following a crash. His team, then Ineos, accepted the decision and called his behaviour unacceptable.

Since then, Moscon has largely avoided the disciplinary incidents that marked the early part of his career. The Burgos disqualification has now put him back in the spotlight, even though it remains unclear what exactly led to the decision.
