Tour de France stage 12 profile

Stage 12 features the first major summit finish of this year’s race, the renowned Hautacam climb situated in the Pyrenees.

With two time climbs as appetisers in the Col du Soulor and Col des Bordères, many riders will be suffering before they even reach the foot of the Hautacam. The Hautacam itself certainly isn’t a sight for sore eyes, with a length of 13.5 kilometres and a brutal average gradient of 7.8%. This climb will find any weakness in one’s armoury.

What to expect?

The race leader has won the stage atop the Hautacam on the previous two visits to the climb, Vincenzo Nibali and Jonas Vingegaard in 2014 and 2022, respectively.

For Ben Healy, the aim will solely be to try and hold onto the yellow jersey, but that in itself will be a tall order with only 29 seconds over Tadej Pogačar.

The World Champion came down in a crash in the finale of stage 12, and it remains to be seen what impact this will have on him, but he will want redemption on the Hautacam after 2022.

Jonas Vingegaard will have happy memories of the climb and will be looking to close the deficit to Pogačar in the general classification, whilst Remco Evenepoel will want to maintain his strong foothold in a current podium position.

If a breakaway is allowed to fight for the victory, will we see the polka dot jersey wearer, Lenny Martinez, with plenty of points on offer throughout the stage?
