Biography of pro cyclist Dylan Groenewegen
Dylan Groenewegen is a specialist sprinter in the truest sense: explosive, fearless and built for the flat-out finishes that decide the Grand Tours' bunch-sprint stages. At his best he is among the quickest finishers in the world, capable of beating any rival in a straight drag race to the line.
His career has also been a story of resilience. After a high-profile crash and suspension early in the decade, Groenewegen rebuilt himself into a serial winner once again, a reminder of both the risks of his trade and his determination to remain at the top of it.
Early life and rise
Groenewegen grew up in Amsterdam, the city that gave him his nickname, and made his name as a sprinter in the Dutch domestic scene before stepping up to the WorldTour. He developed within the LottoNL-Jumbo / Jumbo-Visma system, where his raw speed quickly marked him out as one of the most promising fast men in the peloton.
His talent translated to the sport's biggest stage early. In 2017 he won the final stage of the Tour de France on the Champs-Élysées, outsprinting André Greipel and Edvald Boasson Hagen, one of the most prestigious sprint wins in cycling and the launchpad for a prolific Grand Tour career.
Tour de France success and a serial winner
Groenewegen became a fixture of the Tour de France sprints, winning stages across multiple editions, including two stages in 2018. He has started the Tour seven times, finished all but one, and taken stage wins in five different editions, most recently in Dijon in 2024, placing him among the most successful Tour sprinters of his generation.
The 2020 crash and comeback
In August 2020, Groenewegen was involved in a serious crash at the Tour de Pologne, where he deviated from his line in a high-speed sprint finish and brought down Fabio Jakobsen, who was badly injured. Groenewegen received a nine-month suspension and has spoken candidly about the guilt and pressure that followed. He returned to racing in 2021 and re-established himself among the sport's elite sprinters, winning stages at the Vuelta a España and continuing to add Tour de France victories, a comeback defined by perseverance.
Rider profile: strengths, style, and characteristics
Groenewegen is a pure sprinter with a devastating top-end kick. He relies on precise positioning in the final kilometres and a well-drilled lead-out, and on a flat, straightforward finish he is a match for anyone. He is not a Classics rider or a climber; his domain is the bunch sprint, where his acceleration and nerve in chaotic finales set him apart.
Personal life
Known throughout the sport as the "Lion of Amsterdam," Groenewegen carries his home city as part of his identity. He has been open about the mental toll of the 2020 crash and its aftermath, and his ability to return to winning ways has been one of the more humanising arcs in modern sprinting.

What's next for Dylan Groenewegen?
Now in his thirties, Groenewegen remains focused on adding to his Grand Tour stage tally and proving he is still among the fastest finishers in the world. Having moved on from Jayco AlUla for the 2026 season, the targets are familiar: bunch-sprint stages at the Tour de France and beyond, and the chance to extend a palmares already rich in some of cycling's most coveted sprint wins.
