LIVE: 2026 Giro d'Italia Stage 5: Breakaway bingo?

Giro d'Italia - Stage 5

The 2026 Giro d'Italia heads into its first proper test on Wednesday, with stage 5 between Praia a Mare and Potenza the toughest day of racing so far. The 203km route inland from the Tyrrhenian coast features 3,724m of climbing, with the category 2 ascent of Montagna Grande di Viggiano (6.6km at 9.1%, with pitches up to 15%) cresting around 50km from the finish, before a technical run-in to Potenza that closes with a 350m drag at 8% to the line. A breakaway day in theory, although the climb is hard enough to tempt some of the GC men, too. Stage 5 is set to roll out at 12:25 CET, with the finish anticipated late afternoon.
