Magnier wins ADAC Cyclassics after surviving Waseberg selection

The race had gradually become too hard for several of the main sprinters. Dylan Groenewegen (Unibet Rose Rockets) was dropped with around 70km remaining, while Olav Kooij (Decathlon CMA CGM) and Jonathan Milan (Lidl-Trek) missed the key split much closer to the finish.

That split came after UAE Team Emirates-XRG lifted the pace on the final Waseberg. Florian Vermeersch set up Isaac del Toro with around 16km to go and, although the Mexican was unable to ride clear, his acceleration broke the peloton apart.

Magnier was safely in the front group, while Kooij and Milan were left chasing behind.

Soudal Quick-Step took responsibility once the race came back onto the flatter roads into Hamburg and helped keep the chasing group at a distance.

Jasper Stuyven led the front group into the final kilometre with Magnier on his wheel. Red Bull-Bora-Hansgrohe then came through before Danny van Poppel started the sprint early.

Magnier waited, moved out into the open and quickly put daylight between himself and the rest. Teunissen (XDS Astana) finished second, but nobody came close to matching the Frenchman's speed.

Six riders formed the early breakaway: Jonas Rutsch (Lotto Intermarché), Benjamin Thomas (Cofidis), Dries De Pooter (Team Jayco AlUla), Niklas Behrens and Loe van Belle (Visma | Lease a Bike), and Filip Maciejuk (Movistar). Their advantage reached 4:20 with 140km remaining.

Behrens stood out in the move having raced only five days all season before lining up in Hamburg, fewer than anyone else on the start list.

Del Toro crashed in the feed zone with just over 100km to go and needed a bike change, but was able to continue.

Lidl-Trek, Decathlon CMA CGM and Soudal Quick-Step began to bring the break back inside the final 125km, before the race opened up on the Waseberg.

Haimar Etxeberria (Red Bull-Bora-Hansgrohe) was among the first riders to attack. Benoît Cosnefroy (UAE Team Emirates-XRG) then went clear with Brandon Rivera (Netcompany-Ineos), Tim Rex (Visma | Lease a Bike) and Brent Van Moer (Pinarello Q36.5).

Rivera was dropped from the group with 66km remaining, while Rex continued to attack after the move was brought back.

Groenewegen was already in trouble by that point and lost contact with the peloton around 70km from the finish.

Florian Vermeersch and Gianni Vermeersch (Red Bull-Bora-Hansgrohe) were the next riders to move, opening a small gap with around 60km remaining.

At the start of the final lap, NSN, Lidl-Trek, Soudal Quick-Step, Uno-X Mobility and Decathlon CMA CGM were all involved in the chase.

De Pooter was caught with 36km remaining, before the rest of the break began to split.

Thomas attacked with 27km to go and only Rutsch could follow. Van Belle, Behrens and Maciejuk remained just behind, with the peloton closing to less than a minute.

Vlad Van Mechelen (Bahrain Victorious) and Jonas Abrahamsen (Uno-X Mobility) both tried moves from the bunch before the final Waseberg, but neither was able to get away.

The last of the break was caught as UAE Team Emirates-XRG came to the front.

Vermeersch then drove the pace towards the final Waseberg and launched Del Toro with around 16km remaining. Del Toro's acceleration was not enough to get clear, but it did split the bunch.

Magnier made the front group, while Kooij and Milan did not.

Mick van Dijke (Red Bull-Bora-Hansgrohe) tried to take advantage after the climb, but Soudal Quick-Step quickly brought him back and began riding for the sprint.

Visma | Lease a Bike also helped keep the pace high at the front, leaving the chasing group little chance of returning.

Fred Wright (Pinarello Q36.5) crashed in the closing kilometres as the front group prepared for the sprint.

Stuyven took over under the flamme rouge with Magnier in his wheel. Red Bull-Bora-Hansgrohe briefly moved ahead before Van Poppel opened the sprint from distance.

Magnier chose his moment and came past with ease, opening a clear gap before the line to win in Hamburg ahead of Teunissen.
