Merlier surges to Tour of Britain stage 2 victory after late Vermeersch attack neutralised

Tim Merlier (Soudal Quick-Step) produced a dominant late surge to claim stage 2 of the Lloyds Tour of Britain Men, winning from a reduced front group after crosswinds shattered the peloton.

A late solo effort from Florian Vermeersch (UAE Team Emirates-XRG) threatened to disrupt the sprinters in the closing kilometres, but Soudal Quick-Step and Netcompany INEOS organised a rapid chase to force a selective sprint finish.

Crosswinds split peloton following early breakaway catch

The 180 km stage saw an early four-man escape group establish a maximum advantage of over three minutes. Jonah Killy (Tarteletto-Isorex), János Pelikán (Team United Shipping), Axel Källberg (Lucky Sport Cycling Team), and Lucas Bénéteau (St Michel-Mavic-Auber93) shared the intermediate mountain points across Kirmond Road and Rothwell Hill before the main field reabsorbed them with 57 kilometres remaining.

As the race traversed exposed Lincolnshire roads with 32 kilometres to go, heavy crosswinds caused immediate splits. The peloton fractured into distinct groups, with a front selection of roughly 40 riders forging ahead. Driven by UAE Team Emirates-XRG, Soudal Quick-Step, and Netcompany-Ineos, the front group established a decisive 50-second buffer over the main pursuit.

With 7.3 kilometres remaining, Vermeersch launched a sharp attack from the lead group, opening a ten-second gap as the chase hesitated behind. Netcompany-Ineos, led by Filippo Ganna, who had earlier suffered a mechanical, took control of the pursuit alongside NSN Cycling Team to reel in the Belgian within the final 2.1 kilometres.

Soudal Quick-Step assumed control through the technical final kilometre, delivering Merlier to the front. The Belgian sprinter launched his kick 500 metres from the line, comfortably holding off his rivals to secure the stage victory.
