Dušan Rajović (Solution Tech Nippo Rali) upset pre-stage favourites Red Bull-Bora-Hansgrohe by sprinting to victory on stage 2 of the Tour of Slovenia in Ormož ahead of Laurence Pithie (Red Bull-Bora-Hansgrohe) and Nikiforos Arvanitou (United Shipping).

It was a fast finish in Omrož, which came after the stage was briefly neutralised with around 30km remaining after a crash on a descent following the Jeruzalem climb.

When the action resumed, Red Bull took control at the front of the peloton, setting a firm tempo, as they looked to double up in stage wins.

The German team remained in control before Modern Adventure Pro Cycling also began contributing to the pace-setting inside the final 10km.

Jan Tratnik led inside the final kilometre before Ben Oliver (Modern Adventure) launched an early sprint. Pithie latched on Oliver’s wheel and eventually launched his own kick.

However, the New Zealander was unable to match the pace of Rajović, who had timed his own effort to perfection to take the victory having missed out on the opportunity to compete in the opening stage finish.

It marks Rajović’s sixth victory of the season, adding to wins in Italy, Taiwan, Hainan and Greece.

Despite missing out on back-to-back stage wins, Pithie remains in the race leader’s jersey going into stage 3.
