Juan Ayuso won stage 5 of the Volta ao Algarve by edging Oscar Onley in a tight sprint on the Alto do Malhão, sealing overall victory. The finale was shaped by an early break featuring Julian Alaphilippe and Max Schachmann, with Schachmann crashing hard on the descent and the move eventually brought back before the final climb. João Almeida and UAE Team Emirates-XRG drove the decisive showdown uphill, but Ayuso held firm, then surged past Onley in the final metres, with Paul Seixas taking third on the stage.
