Paul Magnier won the opening stage of the 2026 Giro d’Italia in Burgas, Bulgaria, taking the first maglia rosa after a chaotic finale. The stage had been controlled by the sprinters’ teams after an early breakaway by Diego Pablo Sevilla and Manuele Tarozzi was caught with 22km remaining. A major crash inside the final kilometre blocked much of the peloton, leaving Magnier to outsprint the remaining contenders for his first Grand Tour stage victory.
